Bullying - How to deal with the bully at work


Being bullied at work can sometimes be so awful that the only option available to you may seem to be to hand in your resignation. This however, might not be the best option as you might not have a new job to go to, and by doing this, you might also feel like you are a failure. So how do you deal with this sort of behaviour?

Often bullying at work is not only used to put you on the defensive but to make you fight back. Professional Counsellors who deal with these situations often say that dealing with difficult people can be a matter of changing the way you behave in front of them. This may seem a daunting task but you can start by using some subtle techniques.

One technique is to pass the fight back to your bully. By passing the fight back, your bully will quickly get bored and go somewhere else.

An example could be that if your boss criticises your work agree with them and ask them: "I agree, What specifically would you like me to do?" This way you are passing the fight back to them.

Ask yourself "How am I behaving with this person, what am I doing to give this person a licence to act this way towards me?"

Body language can be a good weapon. By standing up when you speak and speaking in a calm and assertive way will have a psychological effect. lt is easier to bully someone when they are sitting down than standing up. Try matching and mirroring techniques. This technique is a useful way to generate rapport and equalise the relationship.

What about when all else fails and a confrontation is inevitable? You should always stay unemotional and quiet, don't lose control and say you are very disappointed and angry but don't show your emotions.
