Job Hunting - Relocating for a new job

Imagine you are finally offered your dream job but it is based 300 miles from where you live. This might sound exciting but would you go for it? Statistics show that the uptake is lower than you expected. Some recruitment agencies are even quite strict about finding jobs for people wanting to relocate because of the number of times they have second thoughts.

You will need to ask yourself some very important questions before you commit yourself:

  • How much will it cost me to move?

  • Can I afford to live there?

  • Will I enjoy the lifestyle and culture?

  • Can I afford to move back home if it doesn't work out?

  • How will it affect my family?

How do you go about finding a job?

  • Draw up a list of places where you would like to live

  • Look at prospective employers in that area.

  • Check out web sites where you can search for a job by location - see our list of other job sites Job Searching click here

  • Sign up with a recruitment agency in your chosen area.

Can I expect financial help?

Companies will usually pay a lump sum towards moving costs and help with estate agency fees. Companies will often consider relocating you if there is a shortage of staff and suitable skills in an area.

What if I don't want to relocate?

If you don't want to relocate you may find a company who will let you work from home. More and more companies are setting up offices at the homes of employees. They communicate with their bosses through video conferencing, telephone and e-mail. Everything is done electronically.

You can find out information on property prices, nearby schools, local services and other details by visiting Upmystreet link www.upmystreet.co.uk. This web site is geared towards helping you move from organising a mortgage to finding a property and a solicitor.
